Chinese auto giant Geely Auto has introduced the AI-powered G-Pilot smart driving system, intensifying competition in the electric vehicle (EV) sector as rivals BYD and Tesla push forward with their own smart driving technologies.
Unveiled at a recent event, G-Pilot comprises five levels of intelligent driving solutions: G-Pilot H1, G-Pilot H3, G-Pilot H5, G-Pilot H7, and G-Pilot H9, designed to offer varying degrees of autonomy. The system is Geely’s answer to BYD’s God’s Eye smart driving system and Tesla’s Full Self-Driving (FSD) technology.
G-Pilot Hardware and Capabilities
Each G-Pilot level is equipped with a unique combination of sensors, cameras, and AI-driven functionalities:
- G-Pilot H1 features 10 cameras and 5 millimeter-wave radars, supporting highway Navigate on Autopilot (NOA) and automatic parking assistance.
- G-Pilot H3 enhances urban commuting NOA with 11 cameras and 3 millimeter-wave radars, along with highway NOA and parking assist.
- G-Pilot H5 integrates 11 cameras, 3 millimeter-wave radars, and 1 LiDAR, enabling full-scenario, door-to-door NOA without reliance on HD maps.
- G-Pilot H7 shares the same hardware setup as H5 but includes enhanced AI capabilities, such as video large model (VLM) and video language action models (VLA), supporting parking spot-to-parking spot autonomous driving.
- G-Pilot H9 is the most advanced solution, designed for Level 3 autonomous driving. It features 13 cameras, 3 millimeter-wave radars, and multiple LiDARs, integrating a multimodal large language model to enable a fully autonomous, end-to-end driving experience.
AI Evolution and Mass Adoption
Empowered by AI, G-Pilot is designed to evolve continuously via over-the-air updates. Standard features across all levels include Highway NOA and Home Zone Park Assist (HPA). The technology will be rolled out across multiple Geely-owned brands, including Geely Auto, Zeekr, Lynk & Co, and Galaxy.
Geely plans a mass deployment of G-Pilot’s parking space-to-parking space autonomous driving feature starting this month. The first vehicle to feature G-Pilot H1 is the newly launched Galaxy E8, an all-electric mid-size sedan priced between RMB 149,800 and RMB 198,800. Future models under the standalone Geely Galaxy brand, along with facelifted versions, will also incorporate various levels of G-Pilot technology.
Geely’s Competitive Positioning
Geely’s launch of G-Pilot comes as BYD and Tesla ramp up their own smart driving offerings. BYD recently introduced its God’s Eye smart driving system, segmented into three levels: God’s Eye A, B, and C. Meanwhile, Tesla is preparing to bring its FSD feature to the Chinese market, further intensifying competition in the intelligent mobility space.
