The BYD Sealion 05 EV is the latest addition to BYD’s Sealion lineup, offering a blend of practicality, advanced technology, and a competitive driving range.
Designed as a compact electric SUV, the Sealion 05 EV is built on BYD’s e-Platform 3.0 Evo architecture and features a modern, minimalistic design with a spacious interior.
The model is targeted at overseas markets, continuing BYD’s strategy of expanding its electric vehicle presence globally.
Design and Dimensions
The BYD Sealion 05 EV follows the brand’s Ocean Aesthetics design language, characterized by sleek headlights connected by an LED strip and a streamlined front end. Its dimensions measure 4,520 mm in length, 1,860 mm in width, and 1,630 mm in height, with a wheelbase of 2,720 mm—comparable to the Volkswagen Tiguan. The exterior also features flush door handles, blacked-out B- and C-pillars, and a distinctive taillight design.
One of its standout features is practicality. The Sealion 05 EV offers a generous 600-liter trunk capacity, which expands to 1,460 liters when the rear seats are folded down. Additionally, it includes a 110-liter front trunk, enhancing storage flexibility.
Interior and Technology
Inside, the Sealion 05 EV comes equipped with a 12.8-inch center touchscreen and an 8.8-inch digital instrument cluster positioned behind a three-spoke steering wheel. The gear shifter is mounted on the steering column, aligning with modern trends in Chinese EV design. The center console is well-organized with a set of physical buttons, a wireless charging pad, and cup holders.
A notable feature is the built-in storage box with both cooling and heating functions, allowing temperatures as low as -6°C and as high as 50°C. For enhanced safety and driver assistance, the Sealion 05 EV includes BYD’s “God’s Eye” C (DiPilot 100) system, which integrates five mm-wave radars, 12 ultrasonic sensors, and 12 cameras. This enables advanced driving features, including Navigate On Autopilot (NOA) for highway driving.
Performance and Battery Options
The BYD Sealion 05 EV is available with two powertrain options, both utilizing a rear-wheel-drive layout. The base model is powered by a 140 kW (188 hp) permanent magnet synchronous motor, paired with a 50 kWh LFP battery, offering a range of 430 km under China’s CLTC standard. The more powerful variant features a 160 kW (215 hp) motor and a larger 60.9 kWh battery, extending the driving range to 520 km.
Pricing and Market Position
The Sealion 05 EV is available in three trim levels, with pricing ranging from 117,800 to 137,800 yuan ($16,240 – $19,000). For comparison, the plug-in hybrid BYD Sealion 05 DM-i is priced between 102,800 and 142,800 yuan ($14,170 – $19,690).
With a balance of affordability, modern features, and efficient performance, the Sealion 05 EV is set to be a strong contender in the mass-market electric SUV segment.
