BYD has unveiled a new variant of its compact electric hatchback, the Seagull Free Edition (自在版), in China. Priced at 78,800 yuan (approximately $10,800 USD), this latest version of the entry-level EV offers extended range, upgraded comfort features, and enhanced safety.

The launch coincides with a major milestone—BYD has now surpassed one million cumulative sales of the Seagull since its debut in April 2023.

Built on BYD’s e-Platform 3.0, the Seagull Free Edition retains the original model’s powertrain, which includes a front-mounted 55 kW electric motor producing 135 Nm of torque. Power comes from a 38.88 kWh lithium-iron-phosphate battery, delivering a CLTC-rated range of 405 km.

The EV supports DC fast charging, allowing it to charge from 30% to 80% in about 30 minutes at room temperature—ideal for city dwellers needing a quick recharge.

Visually, the Seagull Free Edition introduces subtle but meaningful upgrades. It features a refreshed rear “BYD” badge to match the front styling and adds a full-fabric roof lining for improved cabin quality. Inside, a two-tone version of BYD’s “Sand Dune Pink” trim gives the car a brighter, more premium look.

Technology upgrades include both Type-A and Type-C USB ports, with the latter delivering up to 60W output. A 12.8-inch floating touchscreen running BYD’s DiLink 100 infotainment system offers voice control and cloud-based services.

The Free Edition also includes intelligent power-on/off functionality and comes standard with six airbags and improved systems for lighting, horn, and air conditioning. Higher trims are equipped with BYD’s “God’s Eye C” triple-camera driver assistance suite.

The Seagull Free Edition maintains compact proportions ideal for urban use, measuring 3,780 mm long, 1,715 mm wide, and 1,540 mm high, with a 2,500 mm wheelbase. It continues to target young, budget-conscious drivers looking for practical EV solutions in crowded city environments.

Notably, the Seagull series now begins at 63,800 yuan (around $8,900 USD) for the base 305 km model. Trade-in subsidies of up to 20,000 yuan (about $2,800 USD) are available, further improving its affordability.

Globally, BYD is expanding the Seagull’s reach. In June, the vehicle launched in Europe as the Dolphin Surf, with pricing from €22,990 (roughly $26,900 USD) across 15 countries. The export model features a slightly longer body and drivetrain tweaks. Between January and May 2025, BYD sold 233,126 Seagulls worldwide, including 144,204 units in China, making it the country’s third-best-selling compact EV behind Geely and Wuling.
