EMT Palma has received 23 battery-electric buses from BYD as part of a broader fleet electrification programme for public transport services in Mallorca.

The buses will operate on multiple routes across Palma, the capital of the Balearic Islands, and form part of an initial batch of 68 electric buses included in a larger procurement programme covering 113 vehicles.

In March 2025, EMT Palma approved a €117 million procurement plan for battery-electric buses and associated charging infrastructure.

The programme includes 67 articulated electric buses measuring 18 meters in length and 46 standard 12-meter electric buses.

Under the first partial tender for 68 vehicles, BYD’s Spanish subsidiary BYD Motores Iberia secured one of the contracts and has now delivered the 23 standard electric buses ordered by EMT Palma.

According to the operator, each 12-meter bus cost approximately €573,000.

Jaime Martínez Llabrés, mayor of Palma, said the deliveries represented part of the city’s broader strategy to expand sustainable transportation infrastructure.

“Palma is advancing with a clear and determined commitment to sustainable mobility, aiming to create a well-planned public transport network that meets the real needs of Spain’s seventh-largest city,” Martínez Llabrés said.

“These 23 buses are just the first step in a process that will undoubtedly position Palma at the forefront of the transformation and modernisation of public transport,” he added.

EMT Palma said nine of the newly delivered buses have already entered service and are operating on routes including lines 1, 6, 10, 14, 16, 20, 24, 27, 28, 29, 30, 39 and 40.

The remaining contracts within the first 68-bus tender were awarded to Daimler Buses and Irizar.

Daimler Buses is expected to begin delivering 34 articulated electric buses starting in June, while Irizar will supply 11 articulated buses.

The status of the remaining 45 electric buses included in the broader procurement plan has not yet been clarified.

The project is being financed through the Balearic Islands’ Energy Transition Investment Plan, the NextGenerationEU recovery programme, the Sustainable Tourism Tax, the city of Palma and EMT Palma’s own funds.
