Spanish public transport operator EMT Madrid has ordered 120 new electric buses from Daimler Buses, Irizar and Solaris, as it moves to increase the share of zero-emission vehicles in its fleet.

The buses will be delivered gradually through the first half of 2027. Once deployed, the proportion of battery-electric buses in EMT Madrid’s fleet is expected to exceed 25%, up from the current base of 452 electric buses already in operation.

The largest contract was awarded to Irizar, which will supply 50 units of its ieBus model for up to €30.75 million (excluding VAT). Daimler Buses secured an order for 40 units of its Mercedes-Benz eCitaro, valued at up to €24.6 million. Solaris will deliver 30 articulated buses based on its Urbino 18 platform, worth up to €24 million, marking the first deployment of battery-electric articulated buses in Madrid.

Under the procurement terms, all manufacturers must provide at least a three-year warranty on key components such as traction motors and power electronics, and a ten-year warranty on batteries and structural elements. The solo buses are required to deliver a minimum range of 400 kilometres, while articulated buses must achieve at least 320 kilometres.

The new buses will be distributed across EMT Madrid’s depots, with Irizar vehicles assigned to Sanchinarro, Daimler buses to Fuencarral, and Solaris units to Carabanchel.

In parallel, EMT Madrid is expanding its charging infrastructure, particularly at the Sanchinarro depot. The site will be equipped with 114 inverted pantograph charging points, allowing automated top-down charging. The project is valued at €12.58 million and will be supported by both an on-site photovoltaic system and an 8-megawatt grid connection.

The operator will receive €4.69 million in funding from the Connecting Europe Facility to support the infrastructure rollout. A similar charging system has already been deployed at the Carabanchel depot.
