Eleven U.S. states have announced the formation of the Affordable Clean Cars Coalition, a new initiative under the U.S. Climate Alliance designed to accelerate the adoption of affordable clean vehicles while supporting domestic automotive manufacturing and safeguarding states’ authority under the Clean Air Act.
Led by governors from California, Colorado, Delaware, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, Oregon, Rhode Island, and Washington, the initiative will focus on reducing the cost of clean vehicles, expanding consumer choices, and growing accessible charging and fueling infrastructure. Resources will also be provided to help states lower vehicle pollution and make clean transportation more attainable for drivers.
The participating states have pledged to coordinate solutions that will reduce cost barriers and increase the availability of electric and low-emission vehicles. In addition to electric vehicles, the coalition will explore other clean technologies, such as low-carbon fuels, as part of a broader strategy to reduce transport-related emissions. The states also aim to work with stakeholders across the transportation value chain, including automakers, suppliers, labor unions, utilities, and infrastructure providers.
“The federal government and Congress are putting polluters over people and creating needless chaos for consumers and the market,” the governors said in a joint statement. “But our commitment to safeguarding Americans’ fundamental right to clean air is resolute. We will continue collaborating as states and leveraging our longstanding authority under the Clean Air Act.”
All eleven states have previously adopted stricter vehicle emissions standards under the Clean Air Act and have often clashed with federal policies under the Trump administration. The new coalition signals a renewed effort by these states to lead the transition to cleaner transportation, provide regulatory certainty, and engage industry stakeholders in building a healthier, low-emission future.
