Electreon is expanding its wireless charging portfolio with Lite DOT, a stationary inductive charging system designed for electric passenger cars and light commercial vehicles. The system can deliver up to 11 kW and is designed to be installed in existing parking spaces without extensive civil engineering work.

Unlike Electreon’s in-road wireless charging technology, Lite DOT is designed for stationary charging while a vehicle is parked. The company is targeting private users but is placing particular emphasis on fleets whose vehicles regularly remain parked for periods of time.

Wireless Charging Without Plug-In

Lite DOT transfers electricity inductively through a charging pad installed above ground in a parking space. A separate wall unit can be mounted on a garage wall or on a pole outdoors.

Electreon said the installation approach avoids the extensive excavation work typically associated with some charging infrastructure. The charging pad can be used both indoors and outdoors.

When a compatible vehicle is positioned over the charging pad, the system detects the vehicle and automatically starts charging. This allows charging to take place without manually connecting a cable.

However, vehicles require a dedicated receiver to transfer energy from the charging pad. Electreon said the vehicle-specific receiver can be supplied by the company or by automotive industry partners. The company has not disclosed which vehicle manufacturers currently support the technology.

Designed For Fleet Parking

Electreon is positioning Lite DOT for fleet applications in which vehicles return to the same parking locations and can charge during scheduled downtime. The system could also be used with autonomous vehicles because charging does not require a driver or operator to connect a cable.

The system operates at temperatures from -30 to +50 degrees Celsius and is designed for use in rain and snow. The offering also includes the Electreon Flow Driver mobile application.

Electreon said the 11-kW output is comparable with the charging capacity commonly associated with private AC charging, while the wireless system is intended to automate the connection process.

Electreon Expands Beyond Dynamic Charging

Lite DOT represents a different application from Electreon’s higher-power wireless charging systems, which are designed to transfer energy to vehicles while they are driving.

The company’s technology is being tested on a section of the A10 motorway in France with a truck, van, passenger car and coach. Electreon said the French test recorded average charging power of 200 kW and peak values above 300 kW.

The technology is also being tested on a section of Germany’s A6 motorway in the Upper Palatinate as part of the E|MPOWER project.

Following its acquisition of US wireless charging specialist InductEV earlier this year, Electreon said it now holds more than 400 patents related to wireless charging.

Charging During Normal Parking

Electreon said conventional fleet charging can involve repeated handling of cables and connectors, exposing equipment to dirt, weather and physical wear. The company is positioning Lite DOT as an alternative that integrates charging into vehicles’ existing parking periods.

Andreas Wendt, Managing Director of Electreon Germany, said:

“Fleet operators need flexible and scalable charging concepts that can be easily installed at their sites and parking facilities and integrated seamlessly into day-to-day operations. Electreon Lite DOT offers exactly that and enables fleet operators to charge wirelessly during regular parking periods.”

Lite DOT therefore uses a lower charging power than Electreon’s dynamic wireless charging systems, with its main focus on automated charging during periods when vehicles are already parked.
