Electra Meccanica (EMV), a Canadian electric vehicle manufacturer, has recently announced that it will no longer produce its three-wheeled EV, the ‘Solo,’ and instead will focus on a new electric car with four wheels, currently known as ‘Project E4.’ EMV CEO Susan E. Docherty stated in a blog post to shareholders that the decision was made because of challenges ranging from the Solo’s exclusion from government rebates to difficulties consumers face when insuring, financing, and servicing a three-wheeled vehicle.
“We believe that major opportunities remain for an experienced maker of smaller, nimbler EVs with eye-catching design and personalized features,” Docherty wrote. “We do not believe that a three-wheeled EV is the way to go given consistent customer requests for more functionality.”

The recall of the Solo in February due to issues of sudden deceleration and EMV’s ending of its manufacturing relationship with Zongshen, China, have contributed to the decision to cease Solo production. Docherty said that EMV will still sell the approximately 800 Solo vehicles in stock.
“We had a manufacturing relationship with Zongshen, and that was not an economically sustainable arrangement,” Docherty wrote. “We are excited to move forward with Project E4, and we will be sharing additional details on this new model soon.”
Docherty’s vision for Project E4 is an electric car that is both practical and fun to drive.
“We are not just building cars. We are creating a new way of driving and a new driving culture,” Docherty said. “We are thrilled to bring the next generation of electric cars to market and to create a driving experience that is both thrilling and sustainable.”

EMV has gained recognition for its innovative and unique designs, and with Project E4, Docherty is confident that the company will continue to be a trailblazer in the EV industry.
“We are committed to pushing the boundaries of what is possible with EVs, and Project E4 is a reflection of that commitment,” Docherty said. “We are excited to embark on this new journey and to continue to lead the way in electric vehicle innovation.”
