Dongfeng Motor has unveiled its first internally developed ultra-high-power electric vehicle charging system, featuring a peak single-gun charging output of 1,500 kilowatts, as the Chinese automaker expands its high-power charging technology portfolio.
The company also introduced its first kilovolt electric drive system during a ceremony at the Dongfeng Global Innovation Center, marking another step in its electrification strategy.
Dongfeng Introduces 1,500 kW Charging Technology
According to Dongfeng, the new charging system is built around a 1.2-megawatt power unit and supports flexible cabinet configurations that allow total charging capacity to be expanded to 2.4 megawatts or higher.
The charger delivers a peak current of 1,500 amperes through a single charging gun while supporting battery systems operating across a voltage range of 150 volts to 1,000 volts.
Dongfeng said the system achieves an overall efficiency of at least 96.7% and is among the first group of Level 1 energy-efficiency high-power charging products to comply with China’s new GB 46519-2025 national energy-efficiency standard.
Its maximum charging output matches the 1,500-kilowatt capability of BYD’s second-generation flash charging system, which was introduced earlier this year as one of the highest-powered mass-produced charging solutions currently available.
The automaker added that it is developing a next-generation ultra-fast charging platform integrating energy storage technology and plans to offer a family of charging products ranging from 720 kilowatts to 2.4 megawatts for both passenger and commercial vehicles.
New Kilovolt E-Drive Targets Future EV Platforms
Alongside the charging system, Dongfeng unveiled its iD5-300SN electric drive unit, the company’s first kilovolt-rated e-drive system.
The motor uses a 1,500-volt-rated silicon carbide (SiC) power module, supports operating voltages from 450 volts to 1,000 volts and delivers peak output of 300 kilowatts.
Dongfeng said the platform is compatible with mainstream 800-volt electric vehicle architectures and can be extended to support systems operating at up to 1,200 volts.
According to the company, the new electric drive offers approximately 30% higher power density than the previous generation while delivering industry-leading efficiency under the China Light-Duty Vehicle Test Cycle (CLTC).
The iD5-300SN will be incorporated into Dongfeng’s Mach powertrain family and is expected to power the first kilovolt electric vehicle from the Epicland brand, which is being jointly developed with Huawei.
Charging Technology Competition Intensifies
The launch comes as Chinese automakers continue accelerating development of faster charging technologies.
Earlier this week, China FAW Group’s Hongqi brand announced a newly developed battery capable of charging from 10% to 70% state of charge in 3 minutes and 41 seconds during laboratory testing.
BYD’s second-generation Blade Battery reaches the same charging interval in approximately five minutes when paired with the company’s flash charging infrastructure. The automaker has also announced plans to deploy 20,000 flash charging stations across China by the end of 2026.
