Dongfeng Motor has outlined a roadmap for the commercialization of its solid-state battery technology, targeting production of 50,000 vehicles equipped with the company’s in-house developed batteries by 2027.
The target was announced by Zhang Wei, new battery operations manager at the Advanced Technology Research Institute under Dongfeng Group’s Research and Development Academy, during the 21st Shanghai International Automobile Manufacturing Technology & Equipment and Material Exhibition on Wednesday.
According to Zhang, Dongfeng also plans to deploy 100 demonstration vehicles powered by solid-state batteries before the end of this year.
Commercialization Planned in Phases
The company expects to begin pilot deployment of vehicles equipped with fast-charging solid-state batteries in 2027, alongside the launch of pilot production for its 350 watt-hour-per-kilogram (Wh/kg) fast-charging battery.
Zhang said Dongfeng aims to achieve small-scale commercial production of solid-state battery vehicles around 2030, followed by large-scale production and broader market adoption around 2035.
The company added that its solid-state battery program has entered a key validation stage after completing winter testing of its 350 Wh/kg battery earlier this year. Vehicle integration is scheduled for the fourth quarter.
According to Zhang, the battery has already entered stable batch production.
In-House Technology Development
Dongfeng said it developed all core technologies internally, including battery electrodes, solid-state electrolytes and complete battery pack integration.
The automaker has previously stated that the 350 Wh/kg battery offers approximately twice the energy density of conventional lithium iron phosphate (LFP) batteries, which typically range between 140 Wh/kg and 210 Wh/kg.
The company said the battery is capable of providing a driving range of more than 1,000 kilometers on a single charge.
In June 2025, Dongfeng completed construction of its solid-state battery laboratory and commissioned a 0.2 gigawatt-hour (GWh) pilot production line for the technology.
Industry Competition Intensifies
Dongfeng joins a growing number of Chinese automakers and battery manufacturers investing in solid-state battery development.
Earlier this year, Hongqi, the luxury brand of China FAW Group, introduced its first prototype vehicle equipped with a solid-state battery.
Battery manufacturers CATL and BYD have also announced plans to begin small-scale installations of solid-state batteries in production vehicles by 2027, reflecting broader industry efforts to commercialize next-generation battery technologies for electric vehicles.
