Dongfeng Nissan has launched the NX8, its first model to offer extended-range electric vehicle (EREV) technology, as the automaker intensifies efforts to compete in China’s rapidly evolving EV market.

The mid- to large-size SUV, introduced on Wednesday, is available in both battery electric (BEV) and EREV variants. Official prices range from 159,900 yuan ($23,380) to 209,900 yuan, with a limited-time promotional starting price of 149,900 yuan.

The pricing strategy appeared to drive early demand, with the company reporting 8,423 orders within 30 minutes of launch.

Deliveries of the BEV versions began immediately on April 8, while EREV variants are scheduled to reach customers between mid and late May.

The NX8 measures 4,870 mm in length, 1,920 mm in width and 1,680 mm in height, with a wheelbase of 2,917 mm. Higher-end variants are equipped with lithium iron phosphate batteries supplied by CATL, supporting up to 5C ultra-fast charging and offering a range of up to 630 kilometres under the CLTC standard.

The vehicle also integrates advanced digital and driver assistance technologies, including a Qualcomm 8295P chip and an ADAS system developed by Momenta, enabling navigation-assisted driving in both urban and highway environments.

The NX8 is the third model in Dongfeng Nissan’s N-series lineup for China, following the N7 electric sedan and the N6 plug-in hybrid sedan. Both earlier models were launched with competitive pricing, starting at 119,900 yuan and 91,900 yuan respectively.

The introduction of the NX8 underscores a broader strategy among traditional joint venture automakers in China to respond to rising competition from domestic EV manufacturers through faster product rollouts and aggressive pricing.

The addition of EREV technology also signals a shift toward more flexible electrification strategies, catering to consumers seeking longer range and reduced reliance on charging infrastructure.
