Denza has unveiled the BAO 5 in Europe, marking the debut of the premium brand’s first sport utility vehicle (SUV) in the region as it expands its model lineup beyond electric sedans and multipurpose vehicles.
The plug-in hybrid SUV was introduced at the Goodwood Festival of Speed in the United Kingdom and will join the Z9GT and D9 DM-i as Denza, BYD Group’s premium brand, broadens its retail network across Europe.
Plug-In Hybrid Powertrain Targets Off-Road Performance
The BAO 5 is built on Denza’s Dual Mode Off-road (DMO) platform, combining a 1.5-liter turbocharged gasoline engine with front and rear electric motors.
According to the company, the system delivers a combined output of 544 PS (400 kW) and 760 Nm of torque, enabling the SUV to accelerate from 0 to 62 mph in as little as 4.8 seconds, depending on the variant.
Power is supplied by a 31.8-kWh Blade Battery integrated into the vehicle’s ladder-frame chassis using cell-to-chassis technology.
Denza said the BAO 5 offers up to 56 miles (90 kilometers) of electric-only driving range under the WLTP test cycle and a combined driving range of 537 miles (864 kilometers) with a full battery and fuel tank.
The vehicle supports 11-kW AC charging, while DC fast charging can replenish the battery from 30% to 80% in approximately 16 minutes using a charger rated at 100 kW or higher.
Advanced Chassis and Cabin Technologies
The BAO 5 features front and rear electronic differential locks and an electronically controlled torque distribution system designed to improve off-road performance.
The Ultimate variant is equipped with Denza’s DiSus-P intelligent suspension system, which adjusts damping in real time and can increase ground clearance to 310 millimeters while providing up to 140 millimeters of ride-height adjustment.
Inside, the SUV features a 15.6-inch central infotainment display with Google Built-in, a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster, a passenger display and a head-up display.
The cabin also includes a voice assistant supporting more than 300 vehicle functions, Devialet premium audio, heated, ventilated and massage front seats, and a multifunction center console with cooling and heating capabilities.
Denza said the BAO 5 incorporates a body structure made from 96% high-strength steel and comes standard with 11 airbags and a suite of advanced driver assistance systems, including adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping assistance, cross-traffic alert and a 360-degree camera.
BYD Executive Vice President Stella Li said the model is designed to combine off-road capability with premium comfort.
“The BAO 5’s sophisticated design, high-quality cabin and advanced DMO plug-in hybrid powertrain make it the perfect choice for buyers who want off-road ability without compromise on interior comforts and technologies.”
Denza said customer orders for the BAO 5 will open across Europe this summer, with first deliveries expected during the fourth quarter of 2026. UK pricing has not yet been announced.
