Mitsubishi Fuso Bus and Truck Corporation, a subsidiary of Daimler Truck, has unveiled its latest electric box truck, the next-generation eCanter, in Hong Kong. This launch marks the first release of the new Fuso model in the Asian market outside of Japan, signaling the company’s commitment to expanding its electric vehicle offerings globally.
While Mitsubishi Fuso withdrew from the US market in 2020, it has maintained a strong presence in Europe, Indonesia, Taiwan, and New Zealand. The company’s reputation for quality and innovation is exemplified in the new eCanter model, which is poised to continue its success in these regions.
The eCanter is available in three versions – S, M, and L – each equipped with different battery packs, catering to a range of customer needs. With seven variants in total, the eCanter covers gross vehicle weight (GVW) ratings between 5 and 8.55 tons, offering versatility and flexibility for various applications.
Powered by a compact 110/129 kW (approximately 172 peak hp) e-axle, the eCanter boasts an electronically-controlled top speed of 55 mph. While not designed for high-speed performance, the eCanter’s electric drivetrain enables it to tackle steep 20% grades while fully loaded, a testament to its capabilities.
In terms of safety, the new eCanter models are equipped with features like Active Sideguard Assist 1.0 and Active Attention Assist, enhancing driver and pedestrian safety in Hong Kong’s bustling urban environment. These safety features, along with driver safety ratings, energy management software, and geofencing, make the eCanter a compelling choice for fleet operators.
Furthermore, upfitters will appreciate the eCanter’s motorized electric Power Take-Off (ePTO), which offers power extraction similar to diesel trucks. Mounted under the cab, the ePTO can drive hydraulic pumps and refrigeration compressors without modification, facilitating the integration of the eCanter into existing fleets.
To encourage the adoption of commercial electric vehicles, including the new Fuso eCanter, the Hong Kong government has established a $1.1 billion (HKD) New Energy Transport Fund. This fund will subsidize the integration of electric vans and trucks into existing fleets, providing a significant incentive for businesses to embrace sustainable transportation solutions.
With its launch in Hong Kong, the Mitsubishi Fuso eCanter sets a new standard for electric box trucks in Asia, offering a blend of performance, safety, and sustainability that aligns with the region’s evolving transportation needs.
