Citroen is reportedly considering reviving its classic 2CV model as an electric vehicle, with early design work allegedly in progress. According to a report by Autocar citing an unnamed senior source, the project is still in its initial stages, but it aims to capture the essence and aesthetics of the iconic French car. The 2CV, which ceased production more than 30 years ago, remains a cultural symbol in Europe, and a modern electric reinterpretation could appeal to a nostalgic market.
While Citroen has previously dismissed the possibility of reintroducing the 2CV, the brand’s head of design, Pierre Leclercq, recently left the door open to retro-inspired projects.

At the 2024 Brussels Motor Show, Leclercq reportedly hinted that the brand was not opposed to exploring retro concepts, though he did not confirm any plans for a 2CV revival.
If the project advances, Autocar speculates the electric 2CV could leverage the Stellantis Smart Car platform, placing it between Citroen’s Ami subcompact EV and the ë-C3 e-compact.
A potential launch in 2028 would align with the 80th anniversary of the 2CV’s original debut at the Paris Motor Show, making it a fitting tribute.

This potential move mirrors a broader trend among automakers to modernize classic designs. Renault, a key competitor, has introduced retro-inspired EVs such as the Renault 5 and Renault 4 and may reintroduce the Espace in a similar format.
A revived electric 2CV could position Citroen to capitalize on this growing segment while honoring its automotive heritage.
