China has always been a potential market for electric vehicles apart from North America and Europe. Data at the end of June showed that China’s new energy vehicle (NEV) ownership had surpassed the milestone of 10 million units.
By the end of June 2022, there were a total of 310 million vehicles in China with 10.1 million of them being NEVs, according to data released today by China’s Ministry of Public Security.
New energy vehicles are in the early phase of transition from internal combustion engine vehicles, accounting for 3.23 percent of all vehicles in China.
Of the 10.1 million NEV currently circulating in China, 8.1 million units are pure electric vehicles or 80.93 percent of the total number of NEVs.
From January to June this year, a total of 2.21 million NEVs were registered in China. The number increased by 100.26 percent compared to the first semester of last year.
Other data shows 19.90 percent or one in five new car buyers buy NEVs.
Preliminary statistics show that in June, retail sales of passenger cars in China were 1.296 million units, up 22 percent from a year earlier and 42 percent from May, the China Passenger Car Association said today.
