Dongguan Mentech Optical & Magnetic said it has signed an agreement to acquire a 60% stake in ChargeDot, ABB E-Mobility’s home and workplace charging business, in a deal expected to close in the fourth quarter of 2025 pending regulatory approval.
The acquisition will give Mentech access to ChargeDot’s AC charging technology platform and experienced team, enabling the Chinese firm to expand in the residential and workplace charging segment. ABB E-Mobility will retain a 40% share and continue to support ChargeDot’s growth, primarily by providing its distribution channels in Europe and North America.
“ChargeDot has delivered excellent results in China and key international markets since its launch,” said Michael Halbherr, CEO of ABB E-Mobility. “By partnering with Mentech, an established leader in electrification solutions, we are ensuring ChargeDot’s continued success, while concentrating on innovation and product development in the rapidly expanding markets of DC fast and ultra-high-power charging for depots, fleets, and public EV charging.”
Founded in Shanghai, ChargeDot was acquired by ABB in 2019 with a 67% stake, later increased to 80% in 2022. The Mentech deal marks a return to majority Chinese ownership. Mentech Chair and CEO Anson Yang said, “The acquisition of a majority stake in ChargeDot is a transformative step for Mentech. We gain access to world-class AC charging technology, an experienced management team and ABB E-Mobility’s established distribution network in Europe and North America. Together, we will drive the next wave of home and workplace charging solutions in China and beyond.”
ABB said the sale will allow it to “sharpen its focus” on core DC high-power charging systems, while Mentech positions itself to capture growth in the global AC charging segment.
