China’s CALB Group announced on Friday that it is facing a lawsuit from Contemporary Amperex Technology Co. Ltd. (CATL), accusing the company of patent infringement related to battery modules.

CATL, the leading electric vehicle (EV) battery manufacturer in China, is seeking 60 million yuan ($8.19 million) in compensation.

CALB responded, saying that “the patent involved in the litigation relates to battery modules, and there is no infringement involved in the products of the company.”

The company also noted that it had applied to the China National Intellectual Property Administration (CNIPA) to invalidate the patent in question.

The legal dispute comes as the global EV battery market continues to expand. According to a report, global EV battery usage from January to November 2024 reached 785.6 GWh, up 26.4% from 621.4 GWh in the same period last year.

During this time, CATL maintained a 36.8% market share, while CALB ranked fourth with a 4.6% share. CATL’s batteries are used by major OEMs, including Zeekr, Aito, Li Auto, Tesla, BMW, Mercedes-Benz, and Volkswagen.
