Chinese battery manufacturer Contemporary Amperex Technology Co. Limited (CATL) has formed a strategic partnership with APM Terminals, a subsidiary of Danish shipping giant Maersk, aiming to promote electrification in the global logistics sector.
Announced on June 5, the collaboration will focus on leveraging CATLâs high-performance battery technologies and system-level solutions to accelerate the electrification of container handling equipment, which is crucial for reducing emissions in port operations worldwide.
Grant Morrison, global asset procurement director at APM Terminals, said, âAPM Terminals is committed to decarbonization and has established a clear roadmap, and today’s collaboration marks a key milestone in accelerating future transformation.â He described the partnership as âan important step toward the company’s terminal decarbonization strategy through the electrification of container handling equipment.â
This move further deepens the existing relationship between CATL and APM Terminals, which has previously cooperated through the Zero Emission Port Alliance (ZEPA) to promote electric container handling equipment adoption. Established in December 2023, ZEPAâs goal is to accelerate port decarbonization by making battery-electric equipment affordable and widely accessible within this decade.
Li Xiaoning, executive president of CATLâs overseas business, emphasized the partnershipâs impact, stating it will âfurther accelerate the development of industry-leading solutions to reduce greenhouse gas emissions at terminals.â
By focusing on container handling equipment electrification, the partnership supports the global logistics industry’s energy transition and contributes to broader efforts to lower the carbon footprint of shipping and port operations.
