Canada’s first-ever Class 4 medium-duty battery-electric dump truck has hit the road, marking a significant milestone in the adoption of electric vehicles in commercial fleets. The truck, produced by Daimler-backed electric truck brand Rizon, was delivered to Villamar Construction, a custom home builder based in Victoria, British Columbia.

The move underscores the growing appeal of electric commercial vehicles, driven by their lower total cost of ownership, high-performance capabilities, and reduced environmental impact. Rizon’s lineup, known for its car-like driving dynamics and robust electric motors, offers models with gross vehicle weight ratings (GVWR) ranging from 15,995 to 18,850 lbs. and ranges up to 257 km (160 miles) for certain variants.

“By investing in the first Rizon EV dump truck in Canada, we at Villamar are turning our ambition into action and setting a new standard for innovation and environmental responsibility in our industry,” said JT Brown, sales manager at Villamar Construction. “Canada’s commitment to a net-zero future by 2032 inspires us to lead the way in both construction and sustainability.”

Rizon trucks sold in Canada are designed for superior cold-weather performance, featuring electric preconditioning for cabin and battery systems, a feature essential for Canadian winters. The ability to achieve practical range and high-speed charging capability has positioned Rizon as a competitive player in the medium-duty cabover truck market.

This milestone aligns with Canada’s broader sustainability goals, emphasizing that economic decisions like total cost of ownership often outweigh political influences in fleet management. As Villamar’s move demonstrates, commercial entities are increasingly prioritizing eco-friendly innovation while keeping operational efficiency at the forefront.
