China’s new energy vehicle (NEV) sales accelerated in June, with strong export demand helping push electric and electrified vehicles to a record share of the country’s new vehicle market.

According to data released by the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers (CAAM), total NEV sales, including domestic deliveries and exports, reached 1.643 million units in June, an increase of 23.6% compared with the same month last year and 9.8% higher than in May.

NEV production totaled 1.598 million units during the month, up 26% year-on-year.

The performance lifted NEVs’ share of China’s total new vehicle sales to a record 58.5%, marking the third consecutive month of all-time highs.

BEVs Continue to Lead

Battery electric vehicles (BEVs) remained the largest segment, with June sales rising 33% year-on-year to 1.142 million units. Production reached 1.099 million units, also up 33.6%.

Plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) sales totaled 500,000 units, increasing 6.5% from a year earlier, while production climbed 12.1% to 499,000 units.

During the first six months of the year, China produced 7.438 million NEVs and sold 7.446 million units, representing year-on-year increases of 6.7% and 7.3%, respectively.

NEVs accounted for 49.6% of all new vehicle sales during the first half of the year.

Auto Exports Reach Historic High

China’s automotive exports also set a new monthly record.

Total vehicle exports reached 1.037 million units in June, rising 75.1% year-on-year and 11.6% from May, marking the first time monthly exports have exceeded one million vehicles.

NEV exports reached 523,000 units, surpassing the 500,000-unit mark for the first time. The figure represented a 160% increase compared with June last year and a 17.2% rise from the previous month.

BEV exports totaled 309,000 units, increasing 140% year-on-year, while PHEV exports climbed even faster to 214,000 units, up 190% from a year earlier.

In the first half of the year, China exported 5.096 million vehicles, a 65.3% increase from the same period in 2025. NEVs accounted for 2.355 million of those exports, more than doubling year-on-year.

Domestic Market Faces Challenges

Overall vehicle sales in China reached 2.81 million units in June, down 3.2% compared with a year earlier but up 6.9% from May.

CAAM said domestic demand remains relatively weak despite continued growth in exports. The association added that the transition from conventional gasoline-powered vehicles to new energy vehicles continues, although uncertainty in the global economy and subdued domestic demand are expected to remain challenges during the second half of the year.

Chinese-brand passenger vehicles sold 1.812 million units in June, increasing 6.2% year-on-year and capturing a market share of 75.5%.
