Originally unveiled at the Chengdu auto show on August 29, 2021, the Dolphin compact electric vehicle (EV) stands as the flagship model on BYD’s e-Platform 3.0 electric platform.
Currently available in five versions, the Dolphin is priced starting at RMB 116,800 ($16,230), with variations up to RMB 139,800.
In January, BYD sold a total of 201,493 NEVs, with the Dolphin contributing 18,905 units, ranking as the fourth best-selling BYD model for the month, data compiled by CnEVPost revealed.
Yesterday, BYD launched the Qin Plus Glory Edition and the Chaser 05 Glory Edition, reducing their starting prices to RMB 79,800 from RMB 99,800 and RMB 101,800, respectively. This move prompted other car manufacturers, including SAIC-GM-Wuling and Neta Auto, to follow suit by slashing prices on some of their models.

Last year, BYD introduced “Champion Editions” for several of its models in an effort to compete with traditional fuel vehicles by reducing prices.
As NEV makers brace for high growth rates in the coming years, 2024 is expected to be a pivotal year for gaining market share, according to Cui Dongshu, secretary-general of the China Passenger Car Association (CPCA). Dongshu emphasized the intensity of competition within the NEV industry.
BYD has shifted its strategy from merely matching fuel vehicle prices to undercutting them, signaling a bold move in its latest offensive.
