BYD has produced its 17 millionth new energy vehicle (NEV), reaching another manufacturing milestone as the Chinese automaker continues to expand production and refresh its vehicle lineup.
The milestone vehicle is the Seal 08, the flagship sedan in BYD’s Ocean series, the company announced through its official channels on Wednesday.
The achievement comes 82 days after BYD produced its 16 millionth NEV on April 17, 2026. That milestone was marked by the production of the second-generation Denza D9 multi-purpose vehicle (MPV).
By comparison, the company required 120 days to increase production from 15 million to 16 million vehicles. The shorter interval suggests an improvement in production capacity alongside a gradual recovery in vehicle sales.
Seal 08 Expands Premium Lineup
The Seal 08 officially entered the market on July 2, offering six variants across both plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) and battery electric vehicle (BEV) powertrains.
The model has a starting price of 196,900 yuan.
According to BYD, the Seal 08 is the first model in its lineup to offer flash-charging technology as standard across both PHEV and BEV versions.
The vehicle is equipped with the company’s second-generation Blade Battery, which BYD said delivers the longest pure electric driving range in its class.
The battery electric version is built on an 800-volt electrical architecture and offers a maximum CLTC driving range of 905 kilometers. BYD said a five-minute charging session can provide up to 400 kilometers of additional driving range.
The entire Seal 08 range is also equipped with the LiDAR-equipped version of the God’s Eye B intelligent driving assistance system, which includes urban navigation assistance, intelligent parking functions and automatic emergency braking.
BYD is also providing buyers with 12 months of complimentary flash charging.
Production Growth Continues
The Seal 08 forms part of BYD’s strategy to strengthen its presence in China’s premium vehicle segment.
The company said the launch is expected to support sales of the Seal series, which recorded 170,142 deliveries during the first half of the year, down 16.02% from the same period a year earlier.
BYD produced its first new energy vehicle in December 2008, reaching cumulative production of 1 million vehicles in May 2021.
Since then, manufacturing has accelerated significantly. The company produced its 10 millionth NEV on Nov. 18, 2024, while the increase from 10 million to 15 million vehicles took just 13 months.
The latest production milestone comes as BYD’s sales recover following the rollout of its second-generation Blade Battery with flash-charging capability. The battery upgrade had previously contributed to longer delivery times for several of the company’s high-volume models.
