BYD remained China’s largest exporter of passenger new energy vehicles (NEVs) in June, extending its lead over domestic rivals as overseas shipments continued to grow, according to data released by the China Passenger Car Association (CPCA).
The automaker exported 170,897 passenger NEVs during the month, an increase of 98.8% from a year earlier and 9.6% from May. The figure gave BYD a 34.2% share of China’s passenger NEV export market.
Chery ranked second with exports of 73,819 NEVs, followed by Geely Auto with 61,550 units. Chery’s exports rose 177.8% year over year, while Geely posted a 713.2% annual increase as its overseas electric vehicle business continued to expand.
Tesla China ranked fourth, exporting 36,171 battery-electric vehicles during June. The figure represented a 257.6% increase from the same month last year, although exports declined 6.5% compared with May. Tesla accounted for 7.2% of China’s passenger NEV exports during the month.
Chinese EV Makers Expand Overseas Shipments
Leapmotor continued to record strong export growth, ranking sixth with 21,000 exported vehicles in June. Overseas shipments increased 580.7% from a year earlier and 4.1% from the previous month, giving the company a 4.2% share of the NEV export market.
Great Wall Motor (GWM) completed the top 10 with exports of 10,469 new energy vehicles, up 209.5% year over year and 58.7% from May.
The latest figures highlight continued momentum among Chinese automakers as they expand sales in international markets through both battery-electric and plug-in hybrid vehicle exports.
BYD Retains First-Half Export Leadership
During the first six months of the year, BYD exported 769,330 passenger NEVs, an increase of 73.6% from the same period a year earlier. The company retained first place with a 34.5% share of China’s NEV export market.
Chery ranked second with exports of 290,301 vehicles, while Geely followed closely with 275,417 units after recording a more than sixfold increase in overseas NEV shipments compared with the previous year.
Tesla China exported 228,994 vehicles during the January-to-June period, up 126.6% year over year, placing fourth with a 10.3% market share.
Leapmotor ranked sixth with exports of 96,294 vehicles, while Xpeng completed the top 10 with 31,599 exported vehicles during the first half of the year.
Chery Tops Overall Passenger Vehicle Exports
Including both new energy and conventional internal combustion engine vehicles, Chery remained China’s largest passenger vehicle exporter in June with shipments of 187,768 units, representing a 21.4% market share.
BYD ranked second in the broader passenger vehicle export market with 170,897 vehicles, followed by Geely with 102,094 units.
For the January-to-June period, Chery maintained first place in overall passenger vehicle exports with 931,557 units, ahead of BYD and Geely. Tesla China ranked sixth in the broader export market during the first half of the year, while Leapmotor placed tenth.
The latest export data underscores the growing international presence of Chinese automakers, particularly in the new energy vehicle segment, where domestic manufacturers continue to account for an increasing share of overseas shipments.
