Chinese electric vehicle giant BYD has launched the maiden voyage of its largest car carrier, the BYD Shenzhen, boosting the company’s global export capacity for new energy vehicles (NEVs).
The BYD Shenzhen set sail from Taicang, Jiangsu province, on April 27 carrying over 7,000 NEVs destined for Brazil. With a capacity of 9,200 standard vehicle spaces and a total deck area equivalent to 20 soccer fields, it is the largest car carrier of its kind in the world, according to the company.

The vessel measures 219.9 meters in length, 37.7 meters in beam, has 16 decks, and cruises at a service speed of 19 knots. It was officially delivered on April 22 and becomes the fourth specialized car carrier in BYD’s growing maritime fleet.
“The launch of the BYD Shenzhen further enhances our ability to efficiently deliver NEVs across the globe,” BYD said, emphasizing its commitment to sustainability in Brazil, a key overseas market.
BYD is rapidly expanding its shipping capacity to support global growth. The BYD Changsha, the company’s fifth vessel and second with a 9,200-vehicle capacity, is set to enter service soon. The BYD Xi’an, BYD’s sixth ship, was launched in early April.

The automaker’s first vessel, BYD Explorer No. 1, capable of carrying 7,000 vehicles, entered service in January 2024 via a charter arrangement. BYD Hefei, the company’s first self-owned ship, completed construction in September 2024 and began its maiden voyage in January 2025, delivering 5,000 NEVs to Europe. Another 7,000-vehicle vessel, BYD Changzhou, launched in October 2024, started operations in December.
These fleet expansions underline BYD’s strategy to secure greater control over its international logistics network amid soaring demand for Chinese EVs abroad.
