Chinese automaker BYD has marked a significant achievement with the production of the 200,000th unit of its compact battery electric vehicle (BEV), the Seagull. The milestone was reached just seven months after the model’s launch, underscoring its popularity in the market.

BYD shared the announcement on Weibo, showcasing images of the Seagull’s assembly line. The Seagull, positioned as the most affordable model under the BYD brand, has quickly become one of the company’s top-selling models.

Launched on April 26, the Seagull is available in three variants with starting prices ranging from RMB 73,800 ($10,360) to RMB 89,800. As an A0-class electric vehicle based on the e-Platform 3.0, the Seagull boasts dimensions of 3,780 mm in length, 1,715 mm in width, and 1,540 mm in height, with a wheelbase of 2,500 mm.

Powered by a permanent magnet synchronous motor with a maximum power of 55 kW and peak torque of 135 Nm, the Seagull accelerates from 0 to 50 km/h in 4.9 seconds. It offers two range options with blade batteries of 30.08 kWh and 38.88 kWh, providing CLTC ranges of 305 km and 405 km, respectively. The model supports fast charging, requiring 30 minutes to charge from 30 percent to 80 percent.

The Seagull’s affordability has contributed to its broad appeal, reaching a wider audience within the market. This accomplishment reflects BYD’s strategic positioning in different price segments, with the Seagull catering to the lower end of the price spectrum, enhancing the accessibility of electric vehicles for a diverse consumer base.
