British Government Awards £35.7 Million for eMobility Projects

The British government is allocating funding for eMobility projects through the Advanced Propulsion Centre (APC), with four projects in the e-mobility sector set to receive a total of around £35.7 million.

The largest portion, £15 million, will be granted to a consortium led by Nissan. The consortium aims to advance technologies for the reuse, recycling, and energy balancing of electric vehicle batteries. Additionally, funding will be allocated to JLR, Yasa, and Empel Systems, all specializing in electric drive systems.

JLR will receive the second-largest sum, £9.94 million, to develop a next-generation “EDU ‘toolkit’,” a modular family of machines, inverters, and transmissions for future vehicle platforms.

Yasa’s project, titled ‘Re-Gen,’ will receive £7.02 million to develop a dual inverter system for regenerative braking in battery electric vehicles (BEVs), enabling new vehicle designs with optimized electronics and safety systems.

The project SCION, receiving £3.73 million, aims to develop a silicon carbide power module for use in high-efficiency automotive inverters and DC-DC converters.

APC Chief Executive Officer Ian Constance expressed the commitment to building the electric vehicle supply chain in the UK, stating, “By investing in the capability and expertise in this country, we will grow businesses and take decisive action towards creating zero tailpipe emission technology. Our latest R&D funding does just that.”

Minister for Industry and Economic Security Nusrat Ghani also commented, saying, “This is great news for our automotive sector. £72 million of funding will help reinforce the UK as a world leader in zero emissions vehicle technology and further cement our place as the second-largest automotive manufacturer in Europe.”
