BMW Group has received the “Global New Energy Vehicle Innovative Technology” award at the 2026 World New Energy Vehicle Congress for its Gen6 high-voltage battery technology.
BMW was the only automaker from outside China among the event’s technology award winners. The recognition marks the company’s sixth award at the Haikou-based event and its fifth consecutive year receiving an honour there.
Gen6 Battery Underpins Neue Klasse
The sixth-generation battery is a core component of BMW’s Neue Klasse electric vehicle architecture. It uses cylindrical battery cells with high-nickel cathodes and is designed to deliver improvements in range, charging performance and overall vehicle efficiency.
BMW said the development transition from fifth- to sixth-generation eDrive technology generated more than 500 patent applications. The company plans to introduce Gen6 technology across its fully electric BMW Group model range over time.
Jochen Goller, member of the Board of Management of BMW AG responsible for Customer, Brands and Sales, said the award recognized the company’s approach to battery development.
“We are very proud to receive this international award for our Gen6 high-voltage battery. It confirms our long-term approach of combining technological innovation with the highest standards of quality and safety and genuine customer relevance. With the Neue Klasse, we are setting new benchmarks in this area,” Goller said.
Module-Free Pack Uses 800-Volt Architecture
Unlike battery packs built around conventional modules, Gen6 places the individual cells directly into the battery pack.
The system operates on an 800-volt electrical architecture and supports bidirectional charging. BMW said the design contributes to a flatter battery package while supporting higher range and faster charging.
Thomas Engelhardt, Senior Vice President Development High-Voltage Batteries and Charging at BMW Group, described the Gen6 system as a major change across several areas of battery technology.
“The Gen6 high-voltage battery represents a technological leap across all customer-relevant features. Its innovative, flat design with cylindrical cells paves the way for greater range and faster charging, while maintaining the highest level of safety. As a core technology of the Neue Klasse, it forms the foundation for fully-electric driving pleasure across the entire BMW portfolio,” Engelhardt said.
Energy Master Provides Battery System Flexibility
BMW’s in-house Energy Master unit manages the high-voltage battery’s charging functions and supports both 400-volt and 800-volt charging systems.
The Energy Master is also designed to accommodate different battery cell chemistries. This gives BMW flexibility to incorporate alternative cell technologies as battery chemistry and cell technology develop.
The Gen6 battery therefore combines cylindrical cells, a module-free pack structure, an 800-volt electrical system and bidirectional charging as part of BMW’s broader Neue Klasse technology platform.
