Avatr Technology, a joint venture backed by Changan Automobile, CATL, and Huawei, has launched the updated Avatr 11, introducing extended-range electric vehicle (EREV) variants to its SUV lineup. This marks the second model from the Changan subsidiary to offer both battery electric vehicle (BEV) and EREV options.

Originally founded as Changan Nio in 2018, Avatr now operates independently after Nio (NYSE: NIO) largely exited the partnership. The Avatr 11, which first debuted as a BEV in August 2022, is the first premium Chinese vehicle to feature Huawei’s full-stack smart car solution, Huawei Inside, as standard. The updated version introduces the Kunlun extended-range system, previously seen in the Avatr 07 SUV.

The EREV variants of the Avatr 11 are designed to alleviate range anxiety, a key concern for many EV users. While the vehicle is powered primarily by its battery, it offers a driving experience similar to that of a BEV while providing a range comparable to that of a traditional fuel-powered vehicle. The SUV measures 4895 mm in length, 1970 mm in width, and 1601 mm in height, with a wheelbase of 2975 mm.

The EREV variants of the Avatr 11 are available in two configurations, with starting prices of RMB 279,900 ($38,480) and RMB 299,900. The BEV variants are available in three configurations, starting at RMB 339,900, with the top variant priced at RMB 429,900. The EREV models are equipped with the Freevoy hybrid-specific battery from CATL, offering a capacity of 39.05 kWh and a range of 225 kilometers on battery power alone. When fully fueled and charged, the Avatr 11 EREV can achieve a CLTC range of up to 1,065 kilometers.

Both EREV variants are rear-wheel drive, single-motor models, capable of accelerating from 0 to 100 km/h in 6.9 seconds and reaching a top speed of 200 km/h. The BEV variants, powered by a 116.79 kWh Li-ion ternary battery from CATL, offer a range of up to 815 kilometers for the single-motor rear-wheel drive model, and 760 kilometers for the dual-motor four-wheel drive models. The four-wheel drive version can accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in just 3.9 seconds.

The Avatr 11’s advanced features, such as the Kunlun extended-range system and Huawei’s DriveONE electric drive system, aim to enhance both performance and efficiency, positioning the vehicle as a competitive option in the Chinese premium SUV market.
