Audi has announced the integration of ChatGPT into its in-cabin voice-control systems, marking a significant advancement in vehicle technology aimed at enhancing user interaction and safety.

Starting July, Audi will roll out ChatGPT across approximately 2 million vehicles produced since 2021, equipped with the third-generation modular infotainment system (MIB3). This includes models like the Audi A4, A5, and beyond.

New and forthcoming Audi models featuring the E3 1.2 electronics architecture, such as the Audi Q6 e-tron, will also benefit from the new “Audi assistant,” powered by ChatGPT, developed in collaboration with Massachusetts-based software company Cerence.

“The integration of ChatGPT represents a leap forward in our commitment to delivering intuitive, natural voice interactions for our customers,” stated Marcus Keith, Vice President of Interior, Infotainment, and Connectivity Development at Audi. “This technology not only enhances in-cabin experiences but also contributes to safer driving by allowing drivers to keep their focus on the road.”

Audi emphasized that ChatGPT’s capabilities will extend beyond traditional infotainment and navigation control to include broader general knowledge queries, further enriching the user experience. Voice activation, initiated by saying “Hey Audi” or pressing a button on the steering wheel, ensures seamless interaction with the Audi assistant.

Security measures include immediate deletion of interaction data, with assurances that ChatGPT does not access vehicle-specific information. Future developments aim to expand ChatGPT’s functionality, potentially providing specific vehicle-related information like tire pressure recommendations.

“We are combining the strengths of advanced AI with intuitive voice control, aiming to set new standards in automotive technology,” added Keith. “This integration represents a pivotal step towards achieving a best-in-class in-cabin experience across Audi vehicles.”
