Audi has reaffirmed its plan to introduce the A4 e-tron in 2028, with the all-electric midsize model expected to become one of the Volkswagen Group’s first high-volume vehicles built on the company’s next-generation Scalable Systems Platform (SSP).

According to GoAuto, Audi Board Member for Technical Development Rouven Mohr said there was “no need to correct” the previously reported launch schedule, indicating the automaker remains on track despite earlier reports of development challenges.

A4 e-tron to Debut Next-Generation Platform

The A4 e-tron is expected to be the first Audi model to fully utilize the capabilities of the SSP platform, which is being developed as the Volkswagen Group’s future architecture for electric vehicles.

While Audi has not disclosed detailed technical specifications, the platform is expected to introduce a standardized battery architecture, new zonal electronic systems, and improvements in driving efficiency and vehicle range.

Mohr also said the model will showcase Audi’s new “Radical Next” design language and feature a redesigned interior that combines expanded digital functions with traditional physical controls, including buttons and rotary switches.

“There is no need to correct” the planned market launch of the A4 e-tron in 2028, Mohr reportedly told GoAuto.

Audi is developing the vehicle through the Volkswagen Group’s internal “Project House” development process, which is intended to shorten product development timelines and improve collaboration across engineering teams.

Audi Targets Growing Electric Premium Segment

The A4 e-tron will compete in the premium midsize electric vehicle segment against upcoming models such as the electric BMW i3 and the electric Mercedes-Benz C-Class.

Mohr also confirmed that the model lineup will continue to include the Avant estate version, allowing Audi to retain one of its traditional body styles as it transitions to electric vehicles.

The confirmation follows earlier reports suggesting software development challenges within the Volkswagen Group could delay the launch. Previous media reports indicated that integration of new zonal electronics and software developed through the group’s partnership with Rivian had affected development schedules.

Audi has not commented on those reports but now appears to be maintaining its target of bringing the A4 e-tron to market in 2028 as part of its broader electrification strategy.
