Spanish construction and energy group Acciona unveiled its latest initiative aimed at overcoming key barriers to electric vehicle (EV) adoption in Europe, launching the NanoCar Silence S04 on Monday. The electric car, tailored for urban commuting, introduces a novel subscription-based battery exchange service to enhance affordability and convenience.

Designed to accommodate one or two lithium-ion batteries, the NanoCar Silence S04 allows drivers to own the vehicle while subscribing to battery services. This approach, according to developers, positions the NanoCar as one of the most economical options in the EV market.

Under the subscription model, drivers can swap depleted batteries for fully charged ones at designated stations, strategically located at petrol stations, malls, flagship stores, and parking facilities. The initiative aims to mitigate concerns over driving range, offering the flexibility of quick battery replacements that take approximately 30 seconds.

Carlos Sotelo, head of Acciona’s mobility business, highlighted the strategic rollout of battery stations across Spain, projecting an expansion from 140 to over 200 stations by year-end.

Acciona Chairman Jose Manuel Entrecanales emphasized the affordability of the NanoCar, priced below 7,000 euros ($7,582) with state subsidies and tax incentives factored in. He noted, “There are already small electric vehicles, but I believe the NanoCar will be the most affordable on the market due to its removable battery.”

Production of the NanoCar will be based at Acciona’s Barcelona facilities, with an annual capacity of up to 20,000 vehicles. The company has partnered with Nissan to market the vehicle in Italy and France initially, with plans for expansion into additional European markets including Germany from September.
