Stellantis has confirmed the allocation of its STLA Small platform to its Spanish production facilities in Vigo and Zaragoza. The multi-energy platform, designed primarily for electric vehicles (EVs), will also support internal combustion engines. Production in Spain is set to complement a rollout at the Pomigliano plant in Italy, starting in 2028, the company announced.
The decision to award the STLA Small platform to the Vigo and Zaragoza plants reflects their competitiveness, expertise, favorable social climate, and support from public authorities, Stellantis said in a statement.

Both facilities currently produce B-segment models on the CMP and e-CMP platforms, including the electric Peugeot e-2008 in Vigo and the Peugeot e-208, Opel Corsa Electric, and Lancia Ypsilon Electric in Zaragoza. Stellantis did not disclose exact production timelines for the next generation of models based on the STLA Small platform but mentioned that development would begin with “the next model generation.”

Speculation around potential delays has persisted. Reports indicate the Peugeot e-208 could transition to the new platform by late 2026, followed by the Opel Corsa in mid-2027. However, some sources suggest a delay of up to two years, potentially pushing the production of the new Peugeot e-2008 to 2029.

The new platform offers significant improvements over its predecessors, including a targeted range of up to 500 kilometers for electric vehicles. Batteries for the Spanish-manufactured models will feature cells produced by a Stellantis-CATL joint venture at a lithium iron phosphate (LFP) cell plant in Zaragoza, reinforcing the company’s commitment to locally sourced components.
The announcement also comes amid uncertainties surrounding Stellantis’ collaboration with Chinese automaker Leapmotor. Speculation suggests that the planned production of Leapmotor’s B10 model at Stellantis’ Tychy plant in Poland could be affected by new EU tariffs on Chinese EVs. This has led to discussions about alternative production sites, including Zaragoza, though Stellantis has not commented on this possibility.

“This confirmation reinforces our commitment to leveraging advanced technologies and platforms across our European plants,” Stellantis noted. The STLA Small platform is expected to play a pivotal role in the company’s strategy to expand its EV offerings while accommodating a variety of powertrains.
