Penske Truck Leasing is ramping up its commitment to renewable energy by integrating rooftop solar systems across its U.S. facilities, beginning with a newly activated 200 kW installation at its Channahon, Illinois, site. The system is designed to meet around 80% of the building’s energy requirements, with the remainder supplied by the local utility.

“This solar program is an important piece of our renewable energy strategy,” said Drew Cullen, senior vice president of fuels and facility services at Penske. “These investments will allow us to directly generate our own renewable energy to power our locations and continue to support our customers with sustainable solutions.”

The next solar installation is set to come online in Grand Rapids, Michigan, in the coming months, followed by Linden, New Jersey, in 2025. These new facilities are part of Penske’s LEED-certified building program, which prioritizes energy efficiency and sustainability. Additionally, seven existing facilities in California, including sites in Fresno, Hayward, and San Diego, will undergo solar retrofits, collectively expected to generate 600 kW of renewable energy.

Penske partnered with Sunrock Distributed Generation for the California upgrades and collaborates with San Francisco-based ForeFront Power as the lead consultant for its broader solar rollout. Across its solar-powered facilities, Penske anticipates generating approximately 1 million kWh of renewable energy annually, reducing CO2 emissions by 442 metric tons—the equivalent of powering nearly 90 homes for a year.

Penske Truck Leasing, headquartered in Reading, Pennsylvania, operates over 437,000 vehicles and nearly 1,000 maintenance facilities across North America. The solar expansion underscores the company’s broader sustainability strategy to lower emissions and reduce reliance on traditional energy sources.
