Finnish charging provider Plugit says it has completed Finland’s first public megawatt charging session, using a Volvo FH Aero Electric at its Megawatt Charging System (MCS) station in Kotka. The session marks a step in the development of high-power charging infrastructure for heavy-duty electric transport.
According to Plugit, the truck was charged both through Volvo Open Charge and directly through the charging operator, with both methods operating successfully.
Public MCS Charging Expands in Finland
Plugit currently offers public MCS charging at two Finnish locations, Kotka and Lieto. The company operates around 350 public charging points, including nine designed for heavy-duty electric trucks.
The operator plans to increase its focus on electric truck charging infrastructure in Finland and Sweden, with additional MCS installations expected in the future.
Janne Silvonen, Product Manager for Volvo’s electric trucks, said:
“Finland’s first public MCS charging session is a significant step towards the electrification of heavy goods transport in Finland. A long operating range and fast MCS charging make electric trucks a viable option even for longer transport journeys.”
He added that Volvo Open Charge simplifies charging planning and payments, helping logistics companies integrate electric trucks into daily operations.
Volvo Open Charge Supports Fleet Operations
Plugit is a partner in Volvo Open Charge, a service integrated into the Volvo Connect fleet management system. It allows transport operators to locate charging stations suitable for heavy-duty vehicles, check station information and plan charging stops. Payments can also be made through the associated app.
Kempower Supplies Megawatt Charging Technology
The Kotka station uses charging technology supplied by Finnish company Kempower. Under a partnership agreed in January 2026, Kempower provides turnkey charging solutions that Plugit uses to develop its own charging parks and deliver infrastructure for third-party customers.
Kempower’s MCS system can combine up to two 600 kW power units to provide total output of 1.2 MW. The system uses Kempower Mega Satellite charging columns and can be configured with one MCS connector rated for up to 1.2 MW or two CCS connectors delivering up to 560 kW each.
Kempower and Plugit are also planning research and development projects covering intelligent charging reservations, energy management, truck guidance systems and charging hardware pilots. The companies expect to introduce additional passenger-car and truck charging locations in the coming years.
