Michigan Expands Wireless Charging Infrastructure for Commercial EVs with Electreon and Xos Partnership

The State of Michigan has partnered with Electreon, a wireless EV charging specialist, and Xos, Inc., a commercial electric vehicle manufacturer, to expand wireless charging availability for commercial vehicles in Detroit, including UPS delivery trucks. The collaboration builds on Michigan’s ongoing efforts to establish itself as a leader in sustainable transportation innovation.

This initiative follows the successful deployment of the first wireless EV charging roadway in the U.S. on Detroit’s 14th Street, unveiled last year by the Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) and Electreon. The roadway integrates Electreon’s inductive charging coils, enabling EVs equipped with receivers to charge while driving. While public access remains on the horizon, this new partnership will prioritize commercial EV applications.

The project is supported by $200,000 from the Michigan Mobility Funding Platform (MMFP), a key component of the state’s “Make it in Michigan” economic strategy. “We’re excited to demonstrate how Electreon’s technology can optimize electric fleet usage and showcase the seamless integration of wireless charging into daily fleet operations,” said Stefan Tongur, Electreon’s vice president of business development.

Electreon’s technology will also be installed at a Detroit UPS facility to demonstrate stationary wireless charging alongside the expanded roadway infrastructure. Xos co-founder and CEO Dakota Semler highlighted the transformative potential of the partnership, stating, “This innovative approach will revolutionize how we power our electric vehicles and drive fleet electrification forward.”

By integrating wireless charging into Xos delivery step vans, the partnership aims to showcase the technology’s ability to reduce operational downtime and lower the total cost of ownership for commercial fleets.
