Nio has now established over 2,600 battery swap stations across China, as the electric vehicle (EV) manufacturer continues to advance its infrastructure network. On Friday, the company added three new swap stations, bringing the total to 2,601. This growth includes the addition of 45 new stations in October alone, a notable uptick compared to earlier months this year.
Nio achieved a record monthly high in September 2023 with 155 new stations, up from 123 added last October. However, the pace slowed in early 2024, with additions falling below 20 stations per month from February to July. The expansion momentum resumed in August, with Nio adding 40 swap stations, followed by 58 in September. By year-end, the company aims to reach 1,000 new stations, a target set with the launch of its fourth-generation swap station last December.
A significant focus this year has been on growing the swap station network for Onvo, Nio’s sub-brand. Last week, Onvo increased its available stations by 71, which included 18 newly installed fourth-generation stations and 53 upgraded third-generation stations, according to Onvo President Alan Ai. The fourth-generation stations, unlike the previous models, are compatible with both Nio and Onvo vehicles, a feature that enhances user accessibility. Onvo’s own goal is to establish 1,000 swap stations by the end of 2024, with much of the expansion intended to support the recent launch of the L60, Onvo’s first model, which began deliveries in late September.
Nio’s battery swap network is strategically distributed, with 868 of its stations located along major highways. This year alone, 42% of new swap stations were built along these routes. Nio reports that approximately 80% of its customers have access to at least one swap station within a 3-kilometer radius of their home or office. To date, Nio has completed over 56 million battery swaps.
In addition to its swap stations, Nio has established 2,408 supercharging stations in China, offering 11,053 charging posts, and 1,658 destination charging stations with a combined total of 12,856 chargers. Its charging map also includes 1.11 million third-party charging piles.
