Xpeng has introduced a new variant of its flagship SUV, the G9, aimed at consumers prioritizing power over advanced smart driving capabilities. The G9 650 Pro was launched today with a starting price of RMB 309,900 ($44,150), making it RMB 50,000 (13.89 percent) cheaper than the top-tier G9 650 Max, priced at RMB 359,900.

The G9 650 Pro features a dual-motor four-wheel drive system, delivering a combined maximum power of 405 kW and a peak torque of 717 Nm. This variant can accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in just 3.9 seconds. However, unlike the G9 650 Max, it omits the two LiDAR sensors, which means it does not support the full-scenario assisted driving feature known as XNGP (Navigation Guided Pilot). Despite this, the G9 650 Pro does offer assisted driving on highways, including features such as Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) for regular roads.

Originally launched on September 21, 2022, the G9 faced criticism due to its confusing configurations, which detracted from its initial appeal. In September 2023, Xpeng revamped the G9 lineup, now offering five variants with starting prices ranging from RMB 263,900 to RMB 359,900.

With the new G9 650 Pro, the SUV is available in three range options: 570 km, 702 km, and 650 km, with Pro and Max variants for each range. The Pro versions lack LiDAR sensors, while the Max versions include them, thus supporting the XNGP feature. Notably, except for the two variants with a 650-kilometer range, all other G9 models come equipped with a single motor.

In August, Xpeng reported delivering 14,036 vehicles, marking a year-on-year increase of 2.53 percent and a 25.94 percent rise from July. The G9 itself accounted for 2,890 units, contributing 20.59 percent of Xpeng’s monthly deliveries, reflecting a remarkable 369.16 percent increase year-on-year, although it represented a slight decline of 4.65 percent from July.

For the January-August period, Xpeng delivered a total of 77,209 vehicles, up 16.75 percent compared to the same period last year, with the G9 contributing 17,350 vehicles and accounting for 22.47 percent of Xpeng’s deliveries.
