Electric vehicle manufacturer Fisker announced on Friday that it is recalling more than 12,000 Ocean SUVs due to a problem with exterior door handles that may stick and fail to open, marking its third recall in June.

The U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has launched four investigations into various issues related to the Ocean SUV, positioned as a competitor to Tesla’s popular Model Y crossover.

“A door that fails to open can prevent occupants from exiting in an emergency, increasing the risk of injury,” stated the NHTSA, emphasizing that Fisker will replace the faulty door handles at no cost.

Following the recall notice, Fisker has instructed its dealers in the United States, Canada, and Europe to halt sales of affected Ocean vehicles and conduct inspections for the issue.

According to Fisker, the recall affects 8,204 Ocean SUVs in the United States, 513 in Canada, and 3,806 in Europe, totaling 12,523 units.

Customers have expressed concerns on social media platforms regarding difficulties with the key fob unlocking the vehicle and instances where doors fail to open.

Earlier this month, Fisker recalled over 18,000 cars across North America and Europe due to software issues and safety standard non-compliance.

Fisker, founded by renowned car designer Henrik Fisker, filed for bankruptcy protection earlier this month after encountering financial challenges while scaling production and delivering its Ocean SUVs. This marks the second bankruptcy filing for Henrik Fisker, following the demise of Fisker Automotive in 2013 due to issues with its Karma plug-in hybrid electric vehicle.
