The Mercedes-Benz eCitaro G has been awarded the title of Electric Bus Champion 2024, following a thorough comparison test organized by Omnibusspiegel bus magazine. The eCitaro G, an all-electric, locally emission-free bus, stood out among its competitors, impressing the high-caliber jury comprised of more than 40 international specialized journalists and representatives of passenger transport companies.

This victory marks a repeat success for Mercedes-Benz, as the eCitaro solo bus version secured the top spot in the previous year’s competition. The evaluation, which took place in Bonn over four days, included test drives on a challenging circuit, passenger ride-alongs, and a workshop check to assess service and repair friendliness. Judges awarded points based on criteria such as passenger comfort, driver handling, manufacturing quality, and service-friendliness, with the eCitaro G scoring the highest.

Equipped with third-generation lithium-ion batteries (NMC3), the eCitaro G tested in the competition featured six high-voltage battery packs with a total energy capacity of around 588 kWh. This configuration ensures a sufficient operating range for the four-door articulated bus. The bus is also available with a battery configuration ranging from four to seven packs, providing up to 686 kWh of combined capacity.

The interior layout of the eCitaro G resembles that of the familiar Citaro models, offering a seamless transition for both passengers and drivers. The cockpit features a functional and comfortable design, with instrumentation and controls similar to those of combustion engine Citaro buses, facilitating ease of use for drivers.

Safety remains a top priority for Mercedes-Benz buses, and the eCitaro G is equipped with advanced safety features. These include the Articulation Turntable Controller (ATC) for optimal steering, stability, and maneuverability, as well as the Acoustic Vehicle Alerting System (AVAS), radar-based Sideguard Assist, and Preventive Brake Assist for enhanced safety.

Looking ahead, Mercedes-Benz plans to further enhance the safety features of the eCitaro G in compliance with the future General Safety Regulation (GSR) in the EU and other European countries by July 2024. New safety systems will include the Sideguard Assist 2 turning assistant, Frontguard Assist obstacle detection system, and Traffic Sign Assist speed assistant, among others.
