Chinese automaker BYD is making significant inroads into the European and UK markets with the introduction of models like the Dolphin, and the upcoming launch of the $9,000 Seagull in 2025. However, BYD’s impact in Europe extends beyond just personal vehicles, as the company recently unveiled its latest offering: the BYD BD11, an all-electric double-decker bus designed specifically for London.
The BD11, if awarded the contract, is set to replace London’s iconic Routemaster hybrid buses as the city transitions to an all-electric fleet. The bus features a massive 532 kWh battery, utilizing BYD’s Blade technology, which reportedly allows for a range of up to 400 miles (644 km) on a single charge. The modular structure of the battery also means that smaller versions could be available for operators who require less range.
Charging the BD11’s large battery pack is said to take only a couple of hours, thanks to 500-volt charging speeds and the option of using phantograph overhead wires or dual-gun charging. The bus is equipped with four hub motors to deliver power to the ground, active suspension, and driver assistance features such as automatic emergency braking.
BYD’s approach to developing its own motors, batteries, chips, and control systems sets it apart from other manufacturers, giving the company more control over supply and production. According to BYD, there are already 1,800 BYD eBuses operating on UK roads, with a total mileage of 80 million miles (130 million km), resulting in a reduction of 137 million tonnes of CO2 emissions.
