Chinese electric vehicle (EV) manufacturer BYD has initiated a recall of some of its electric vehicles in China due to a software issue, marking the first such recall in recent years.
According to an announcement on China’s State Administration for Market Regulation (SAMR) website today, BYD will recall 16,666 Seagull EVs manufactured between April 7, 2023, and May 31, 2023, with the recall set to begin on May 20.
The recall is related to a software issue with the camera driver in the multimedia display assembly, which may cause some vehicles to experience a problem where the reverse screen cannot be displayed. This issue could impact the driver’s visibility when reversing, potentially increasing the risk of a vehicle collision and posing a safety hazard.
To address the issue, BYD will provide free software upgrades for the affected vehicles through OTA (over the air) technology, ensuring that the reversing image is displayed correctly. For vehicles that cannot receive the upgrade via OTA, BYD will contact users and provide the software upgrade free of charge to eliminate any potential safety hazards.
The Seagull is one of BYD’s most popular models and is known as the Dolphin Mini in some overseas markets. Despite being the least expensive model in BYD’s lineup, it has seen significant sales success.
