Stellantis Taps Former General Motors Executive Carlos Zarlenga to Lead North American EV Expansion

Stellantis has appointed Carlos Zarlenga to lead its North American operations, a move signaling the automaker’s strategic shift toward electric vehicles (EVs) in the United States. Zarlenga, a former General Motors executive, has been tasked with overseeing the launch of eight new EV models as Stellantis embarks on its electric offensive in the region.

Zarlenga’s appointment as Chief Operating Officer for Stellantis North America comes after his successful tenure as President of Stellantis Mexico, where he played a pivotal role in the brand’s revitalization. Under his leadership, the company achieved record profits, with year-over-year sales, market share, and adjusted operating income showing significant improvements.

Prior to his role at Stellantis, Zarlenga held various leadership positions at General Motors for over a decade. He served as CFO for GM Europe, the Middle East, and Africa, as well as President and CEO of GM South America.

Now, Zarlenga is tasked with leading the EV initiatives for Stellantis’ major brands, including Jeep, Ram, Chrysler, Dodge, and Fiat, in North America. The company aims to achieve a 50% share of electric vehicle sales by 2030.

Reflecting on his past successes, Zarlenga emphasized the importance of hard work and problem-solving in achieving positive results. He highlighted the need to address challenges head-on and remain committed to finding solutions, a philosophy he intends to apply in his new role at Stellantis.

As part of its EV strategy, Stellantis is gearing up to launch several new electric models in the US market. Jeep, for instance, recently announced plans to introduce its first all-electric vehicle, the Wagoneer S SUV, with production expected to begin in the second quarter. The brand is also teasing an electric Wrangler-inspired Recon model, set to debut later this year.

Additionally, Stellantis’ other brands are also making strides in the EV market. The Fiat 500e, the company’s first passenger EV for the US, recently rolled off the assembly line and quickly sold out its initial dealer allocation. Dodge is set to unveil its electric Charger on March 5, while Ram’s 1500 REV electric pickup is expected to be available in Q4.

Zarlenga emphasized the importance of maintaining strong relationships with dealers as Stellantis transitions to an electric future. He reiterated the company’s commitment to achieving its EV sales targets, stating, “We’ve said that we’re going to be 50% EV by 2030, and we’re not pulling back from that commitment.”
