Kansas has secured $39.5 million from President Biden’s National Electric Vehicle Infrastructure (NEVI) Formula Program, aimed at expanding the state’s electric vehicle (EV) charging infrastructure. Governor Laura Kelly (D-KS) announced the allocation of over $4.6 million in federal funds for the establishment of six strategically selected EV charging locations, addressing gaps along major highways and the interstate system.
The NEVI Formula program, funded by the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law with $5 billion over five years, aims to assist U.S. states in establishing a comprehensive network of EV charging stations along designated Alternative Fuel Corridors.

The six chosen locations for DC fast chargers in Kansas are strategically placed at:
- Emporia, Flying J, 4215 W Hwy 50 (I-35)
- Garden City, Love’s, 3285 E US 50 (US 400)
- Cherokee, Pete’s, 20 US 400
- Fredonia, Pete’s, 2400 E Washington St. (US 400)
- Belleville, Love’s, 1356 US Highway 81 (US 81)
- Pratt, Casey’s, 1900 E 1st St (US 400)
In accordance with NEVI Formula program requirements, these charging stations will be positioned every 50 miles and within one travel mile of the designated Alternative Fuel Corridor. Each station must feature a minimum of four ports, capable of simultaneously charging four EVs at 150 kilowatts (kW) each, with a total station power capacity of 600 kW or more.

Moreover, these charging stations are obligated to offer 24-hour public accessibility and provide essential amenities such as restrooms, food and beverage options, and shelter. This initiative marks a significant stride in Kansas’s efforts to enhance EV infrastructure and aligns with the broader national goal of fostering a robust electric vehicle charging network.
