Volvo’s First Electric Sedan Set to Debut in 2025, Featuring a 111 kWh Battery

Volvo has initiated the prototype production of its forthcoming luxury electric sedan, tentatively named the ES90, also known internally as the V551. The leak, originating from Volvo’s internal board, featured an image of the V551 team alongside a prominently displayed “CONFIDENTIAL TOP SECRET” sign underlining the significance of the project, with a banner reading “Volvo Cars V551 First VP Car Celebration.”

Initial reports by Swedish outlet TeknikensVärld divulged notable technical specifications, including a 111 kWh battery (with 107 kWh usable), an estimated range of 600 km (372 miles), a 3100mm wheelbase, a curb weight of 2600 kg (approximately 5700 lbs), and two drive configurations: dual-motor all-wheel drive and single motor rear-wheel drive. The leaked information suggests Volvo aims to commence ES90 production in May 2024, with retail availability anticipated by mid-2025.

The ES90 is positioned as a mid-size luxury electric sedan, comparable in size to models such as the Mercedes EQE, BMW i5, Tesla Model S, and Lucid Air. The projected range aligns with the vehicle’s battery capacity and estimated weight, though practical validation remains pending.

Volvo’s commitment to electrification is evident, with the ES90 anticipated to be the first vehicle entirely developed by the company’s China-based Research and Development team. While Volvo manufactures several electric models in China, including the EX30, the company has maintained a substantial engineering and design presence in Sweden.
