BMW has announced the addition of two new plug-in hybrid models to its renowned 5 Series Sedan lineup. This expansion of BMW’s electrified offerings comes just weeks after the debut of the all-electric BMW i5 and the combustion engine variants equipped exclusively with 48-volt mild hybrid technology.
The upcoming plug-in hybrid models, namely the BMW 530e Sedan and the BMW 550e xDrive Sedan, are set to be launched in November 2023. These models are now available for ordering in Germany at recommended retail prices of 65,300 euros (incl. VAT) for the BMW 530e Sedan and 77,300 euros (incl. VAT) for the BMW 550e xDrive Sedan.
In the eighth generation of the BMW 5 Series Sedan, these plug-in hybrid models are characterized by their enhanced efficiency and extended electric range. Both models feature the latest BMW eDrive technology for plug-in hybrid systems, with the BMW 530e Sedan incorporating a four-cylinder petrol engine, and the BMW 550e xDrive Sedan equipped with an in-line six-cylinder petrol engine from the BMW Group’s latest Efficient Dynamics modular generation.
These plug-in hybrid models feature a highly integrated drive unit that offers exceptional efficiency. It contributes to the maximum system output of these two sedans.
The BMW 550e xDrive Sedan boasts a system output and maximum system torque, thanks to the combination of the 3.0-liter in-line six-cylinder petrol engine and the plug-in hybrid system. With BMW xDrive intelligent all-wheel drive, it accelerates with an electronically limited top speed. In purely electric mode, it can reach a maximum speed.
On the other hand, the BMW 530e Sedan is equipped with a 2.0-liter in-line four-cylinder petrol engine featuring BMW TwinPower Turbo technology. Together with the highly integrated e-drive unit, it generates a maximum system output of kW/hp. This configuration enables the BMW 530e Sedan to accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h (62 miles) in seconds, with a top speed, and the capability to reach up to in fully electric mode.
To enhance the power development of the electric motor, a patented BMW innovation has been employed in these plug-in hybrid models. It effectively increases the nominal torque from Nm to an impressive Nm, enhancing acceleration and performance.
The electric range of these models has been extended, with the new BMW 550e xDrive Sedan offering kilometers according to WLTP, and the BMW 530e Sedan providing kilometers according to WLTP. These enhancements allow for longer commutes with zero local emissions.
Additionally, both plug-in hybrid models benefit from their aerodynamic design, which includes special panelling and air deflection elements to minimize air resistance. This optimization contributes to reducing CO2 emissions and increasing the electric range.
The latest version of adaptive recuperation aids in recovering electrical energy during overrun and braking phases, further improving efficiency. The lithium-ion high-voltage battery is conveniently located in the vehicle’s underbody, positively affecting the vehicle’s center of gravity and maintaining the storage volume of the plug-in hybrid models. Notably, the usable energy content of the high-voltage battery has been increased to up to kWh. The maximum charging power has also doubled compared to previous models, enabling a full charge from zero to 100 percent.
Both the BMW 530e Sedan and the BMW 550e xDrive Sedan come with an extended range of standard equipment, including 19-inch light alloy wheels and BMW IconicSounds Electric, which provides an authentic acoustic feedback in electric mode. The BMW 550e xDrive Sedan further includes Adaptive Chassis Professional, enhancing driving comfort and agility.
In addition, the BMW Interaction Bar, a remarkable feature of the ambient lighting equipment, offers modern functionality and striking design. This unit features touch-sensitive control panels for ventilation, air conditioning, and hazard warning lights.
BMW’s introduction of these plug-in hybrid models demonstrates the company’s commitment to electrified mobility and offers consumers a broader range of choices in sustainable transportation.
