Volkswagen Group France is embarking on an ambitious project known as Electrify France. Under this initiative, the automotive conglomerate aims to establish an extensive ultra-fast charging network, unifying brands such as Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles, Audi, SEAT, Cupra, and Škoda. The project envisions the installation of 150 charging stations across the country by the summer of 2024.
Unlike Volkswagen’s large-scale Electrify America venture, the focus in France will be on regions with limited motorway access and peri-urban areas. Leveraging the extensive network of more than 700 sites owned by its various brands throughout France, Volkswagen Group intends to significantly enhance the accessibility of EV charging options.
One notable aspect of this endeavor is the commitment to accessibility. All charge hubs established as part of Electrify France will be operational 24/7, welcoming EVs of any make, fostering a collaborative approach to sustainable transportation.
Each charging station is set to be equipped with at least one charge point capable of delivering a guaranteed power output of 150 kilowatts (kW) under all conditions. Some of the larger stations will boast up to twelve ultra-fast charging points, catering to the growing demand for efficient EV charging.
Volkswagen Group France is already making significant strides in this initiative, with 19 substantial projects comprising 4 to 12 DC charging stations already underway. Additionally, in 2020, the company conducted a successful trial run by installing seven charging stations at French dealerships.
Luc Chausson, Director of Strategic Projects overseeing Electrify France, emphasized the commitment of the distributors to adapt and innovate their business models. “The installation of Superchargers in our network is a strong sign that our distributors are committed to transforming their business model, with the desire to satisfy our customers by installing high-quality charging stations, open to all,” he stated.
This extensive French charging network will complement the existing high-power charging infrastructure already in place across the country, promising even broader coverage for EV users. Volkswagen Group France has also entered into a partnership with Allego to introduce chargers in French municipalities, further expanding access to EV charging.
On the highway charging front, Volkswagen is collaborating with Ionity, a network covering motorways and major roads. This multi-faceted approach underscores Volkswagen Group’s commitment to accelerating the adoption of electric vehicles and enhancing the charging infrastructure across France.
