Rivian’s Software Chief Assures Significant Upgrades : Adaptive Battery Range Tracking and Drone Mode

Rivian is poised to introduce a series of intriguing software updates for its acclaimed R1T pickup and R1S SUV, according to revelations made by Wassym Bensaid, the company’s Senior Vice President of Software Development. During a recent call with analysts, Bensaid offered a glimpse into the forthcoming enhancements, including adaptive battery range tracking and a captivating “drone mode” featuring augmented reality elements. While specifics were withheld, these advancements could potentially revolutionize electric vehicle (EV) user experiences.

The innovation of an adaptive battery range tracking feature holds significant promise for EV enthusiasts. If executed effectively, this feature could provide drivers with an accurate and practical estimate of their remaining mileage, addressing a common concern in the realm of electric vehicles. “We believe that our software capabilities are a structural differentiator that will only grow in importance as electric vehicles continue to increase in complexity,” noted Wassym Bensaid, underscoring Rivian’s commitment to refining the EV landscape through cutting-edge software.

Since the debut of the R1T in 2021, Rivian has consistently introduced 22 substantial software updates, reinforcing its dedication to enhancing the driving experience. Among the notable additions are Camp Mode, Snow Mode, and Bird’s Eye View, which have been well-received by the user community. An intriguing inclusion was the introduction of the “Kneel Mode,” which facilitates vehicle entry and exit by lowering the ride height by approximately 10 inches.

Wassym Bensaid emphasized Rivian’s comprehensive control over the software stack, highlighting the company’s unique position in managing the software ecosystem within their vehicles. This level of control has enabled the integration of diverse features and functionalities, contributing to the brand’s reputation for innovation in the EV sector.

The announcement followed Rivian’s update to investors regarding its production projections for the current year. The company now anticipates manufacturing 52,000 units, a revision from the initial estimate of 50,000 EVs. During the call, RJ Scaringe, the Founder and CEO of Rivian, underlined the pivotal role of software and electronics in shaping the forthcoming R2-based vehicles. The first of these vehicles, an SUV slated for release next year, is projected to exemplify Rivian’s commitment to technologically advanced offerings.

Scaringe stated, “I would say that’s among the most important things to own in looking at what a structurally cost-advantaged vehicle manufacturer will look like in the world of today.” This sentiment underscores the increasing significance of software-driven innovation in the contemporary automotive landscape.

In the second quarter, Rivian demonstrated its manufacturing prowess by producing 13,992 vehicles and delivering 12,640 units, surpassing earlier Wall Street projections that estimated deliveries at approximately 11,000 EVs.

The production hub for Rivian is situated in Normal, Illinois, where the brand assembles its R1S SUV, R1T pickup, and the Amazon EDV. Notably, the facility also houses the assembly of the in-house developed Enduro drivetrain, an integral component for both the electric van and the dual-motor variants of the passenger vehicles.

As Rivian continues to redefine the electric vehicle market, the introduction of these forthcoming software enhancements reaffirms the company’s commitment to pushing the boundaries of innovation and enhancing the EV ownership experience for drivers worldwide.
