BlackBerry’s Software to Drive Electric Vehicle Platforms in Collaboration with Foxconn-led Consortium

In a notable development on Monday, Canadian technology company BlackBerry announced its collaboration with the Foxconn-led Mobility in Harmony (MIH) consortium. Under this partnership, BlackBerry will provide its cutting-edge software and services for MIH’s ambitious electric vehicle platform venture.

The core components of MIH’s EV platform will be integrated with BlackBerry’s renowned QNX operating system, specially designed for automotive applications. The collaboration will also see the incorporation of BlackBerry’s automotive artificial intelligence platform IVY, aimed at efficiently processing and storing the vast amount of data collected from sensors within the vehicles.

Foxconn’s MIH consortium boasts an impressive lineup of suppliers and automakers, including well-known names like Tata Motors (TAMO.NS) from India and South Korean battery maker LG Energy Solution (373220.KS). These industry leaders will work together to design electric vehicle platforms as part of the consortium’s forward-looking approach to sustainable mobility solutions, as outlined on their official website.

Among the exciting developments coming out of the MIH consortium is “Project X,” an EV platform primarily targeted at Asian consumers. Anticipated to make its debut in Japan in late 2023, Project X will undoubtedly be underpinned by BlackBerry’s robust software solutions. Additionally, the consortium is planning to launch six-seater and nine-seater vehicle platforms in the near future, with these platforms also leveraging BlackBerry’s advanced software technologies.

Notably, BlackBerry’s QNX embedded operating system has already gained significant traction in the automotive industry. Currently deployed in approximately 235 million cars, major automakers like Ford (F.N), General Motors (GM.N), and Toyota (7203.T) have already integrated QNX into their vehicle systems.

As the electric vehicle market continues to gain momentum globally, the partnership between BlackBerry and the MIH consortium signals a remarkable step towards accelerating the adoption of cutting-edge technologies in the automotive sector. With BlackBerry’s expertise in software and MIH consortium’s diverse network of industry leaders, the future of electric mobility looks increasingly promising.
