Fuso’s Tramagal Plant Revs Up Production of Next Generation eCanter Electric Trucks

Fuso, a subsidiary of Daimler Trucks, has embarked on the production of the innovative eCanter in Europe, marking a significant milestone in the realm of electric light trucks. Unveiled in September 2022, the latest generation of these fully electric marvels is now being meticulously crafted at the esteemed production plant nestled in the enchanting Tramagal, Portugal.

According to the recent announcement by Daimler Trucks, the renowned Mitsubishi Fuso Europe (MFTE) facility has proudly manufactured over a staggering 250,000 Fuso Canter trucks since the advent of 1980. Building on this illustrious legacy, the factory is now gearing up to fabricate the eagerly anticipated Next Generation eCanter, which took the world by storm last autumn.

Dazzling in its diversity, the eCanter comes in an astonishing array of 42 variations, each boasting its own distinctive charm. With six wheelbases to choose from and a total weight range of 4.25 to 8.55 tonnes, the possibilities seem endless. In the past, the eCanter, introduced in 2017, was exclusively available as a 7.49-tonne truck with a 3.40-meter wheelbase. However, the Next Generation eCanter breaks free from the shackles of uniformity. This electric dynamo is propelled by a 110 kW or 129 kW electric motor, its power adjusted according to the weight, while an optimized driveline and 430 Nm of torque ensure a seamless journey. Of course, speed is not compromised, as the maximum velocity stands at an electronically limited 89 km/h.

Interestingly, over 550 of these remarkable vehicles are already delighting their owners, exuding an air of electrifying charisma. In an effort to cater to diverse needs and bolster customer satisfaction, Daimler Trucks has expanded its range, opening the doors to new possibilities. The latest eCanter, the illustrious 5th generation, commenced production in Kawasaki, Japan, during the first quarter, initially targeting the Japanese market and captivating other non-European markets with its captivating allure.

Delving into the intricate web of the European value chain, we discover that the story does not end with vehicle assembly in Tramagal. In fact, more than half of the components adorning this electric wonder are sourced from an extensive network of over 90 European suppliers. The Fuso eCanter, now proudly crafted in Tramagal, simplifies the transition to e-mobility for customers, making it an inviting proposition for those yearning for a greener future. Karl Deppen, the visionary CEO of Daimler Truck Asia, where the esteemed Japanese subsidiary Fuso operates, warmly states, “With this groundbreaking innovation, we are taking a momentous stride towards achieving CO2-neutral transportation.”

Initially, the sales of the Fuso eCanter from the Portuguese hub will commence in 17 enchanting European markets, spanning the likes of France, Spain, Portugal, Italy, the UK, Ireland, Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Belgium, the Czech Republic, Denmark, Sweden, Finland, Slovakia, Greece, and Poland. Truly, a European expedition awaits!

As we delve deeper into the vibrant tapestry of this tale, we learn that the MFTE workforce in Portugal, consisting of around 500 skilled individuals, is the beating heart behind this extraordinary production feat. Since the conclusion of 2022, the Tramagal production plant has earned the prestigious title of being carbon-neutral, a remarkable achievement indeed. Guided by a profound commitment to sustainability, Daimler Truck has intensified its utilization of renewable energy sources, with plans underway to expand the existing photovoltaic system from an already impressive 350 to an awe-inspiring 600 MW. In addition, a

state-of-the-art water treatment facility has been seamlessly integrated into the production cycle, meticulously treating and recycling an astounding 60% of the process water for reuse, further underscoring the unwavering dedication to environmental stewardship.

In the end, the story of Fuso’s eCanter unfolds as an electrifying symphony of ingenuity and progress, bringing forth a future where sustainable transportation transcends boundaries. With its kaleidoscope of variations, meticulous craftsmanship, and commitment to environmental consciousness, the eCanter is poised to revolutionize the world of electric light trucks and pave the way for a brighter and greener tomorrow.
