It’s not just the high-end hypercars and limited-edition sports vehicles that are flying off the shelves; family haulers are in high demand as well. Volvo, in particular, has been taken aback by the overwhelming response to its latest offering, the EX90, as the entire first year’s production of this all-electric SUV has already been snatched up by eager buyers.

Unveiled last year, the EX90 serves as the electric-only alternative to Volvo’s older, comparably sized XC90, which offers combustion or hybrid power options. Despite its starting price of $80,000, potential customers wasted no time in placing deposits with dealers and securing one of the limited number of cars available in the initial production run.

“The customer response has far exceeded our boldest and most ambitious internal projections,” declared the automaker. “In certain markets, Volvo Cars has temporarily closed the order book due to the complete sell-out of the first production run. However, we plan to reopen it soon. In the United States, on the other hand, we are still accepting orders.”

Built on Geely’s SPA2 electric architecture, shared with the closely related Polestar 3, the EX90 stands out by offering seating for seven passengers with the inclusion of a third row. Base models feature twin motors, all-wheel drive, and an impressive power output of 402 hp (408 PS) and 568 lb-ft (770 Nm). For those seeking even more performance, the aptly named Performance versions deliver 510 hp (517 PS) and 671 lb-ft (910 Nm).

Volvo has not disclosed the base model’s acceleration figures, but they claim the Performance variant can reach 60 mph (97 km/h) in just 4.7 seconds. Both versions are equipped with a 107 kWh battery capable of fast charging at 250 kW, offering an estimated range of up to 360 miles (580 km) according to WLTP calculations, or approximately 300 miles (483 km) in real-world driving conditions.

As one would expect from a Volvo, safety is a top priority in the EX90. It comes equipped with advanced features including one long-range Lidar, five radars, eight cameras, and 16 ultrasonic sensors. Inside the cabin, there is an abundance of cutting-edge technology, highlighted by a 14.5-inch central infotainment screen featuring built-in Google Assistant.

The demand for the Volvo EX90 has far exceeded expectations, proving that the market for all-electric family SUVs is thriving. With its impressive power, spacious interior, and emphasis on safety, the EX90 has captivated the hearts of buyers around the world. As the order book temporarily closes in certain markets due to the initial sell-out, it is clear that Volvo has a winner on its hands.
